GUM DISEASE

Periodontal or gum disease can lead to tooth loss if left untreated. Common periodontal diseases include gingivitis and periodontitis. Periodontal disease can affect one tooth or many and begins when the bacteria in plaque causes the gums to become inflamed. Periodontal disease affects the gums and the bones supporting the teeth.

Warning Signs

Gum disease, or periodontal disease, can often go undetected until the problem is in an advanced stage. Knowing the signs of a potential problem can save you from a serious infection or losing a tooth. Following are key warning signs of gum disease.

Health Connection

Our mouths and our bodies are connected in ways we may not realize. Gum disease can often be linked to health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, stroke, osteoporosis, pregnancy problems and respiratory disease. Diabetics, for example, are more likely to have gum disease because they are more susceptible to contracting infections.
